Rays from Liberty's Torch

New York: Opbacher Brothers, [ca. 1890]. [16]pp. Oblong octavo, string-tied. Original, illustrated card wrappers, a.e.g. Light wear to spine ends. Some toning and dust soiling internally. Original, printed dust jacket, slightly chipped at extremities and with small patch of dampstaining at lower right corner of rear panel, plus minor separation at foldovers. Very good. Item #6430

A scarce souvenir book with wonderful illustrations that present views of the Statue of Liberty and other sites in New York Harbor and around Lower Manhattan, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Battery, and the Narrows. The illustrations are accompanied by the text of notable poems by Robert Southey, Thomas Appleton, and Richard Stoddard. The work is housed in a rare 19th-century dust jacket, with text printed in the same type as the title page on the front panel and an illustration of a snail shell on the rear panel. OCLC locates only three holdings for this work, none of whose entries mention a dust jacket. A great piece of New York ephemera in an unusually early jacket.
