Program booklet for a Shanghai performance of Aubrey Pankey, the first American to hold a concert in China following the 1949 revolution. The baritone was accompanied by a Czech pianist whose name was transliterated as Marie Kenuokewa. Hailed in the biographical introduction as a "progressive Negro-American," the Pennsylvania-born Pankey had spent much of the previous decade outside the United States performing around the world, later settling in East Germany. The booklet includes the lyrics, in Chinese translation, of all the works performed in the concert, as well as an overview of the traditions of African-American music.
