A rather lengthy, and evidently unrecorded encapsulation of the ideas of Charles Fourier by a late 19th-century California resident. Fourier was an early 1800s philosopher and social theorist who, "Advocated a reconstruction of society based on communal associations of producers known as phalanges (phalanxes).... The phalange, in Fourier’s conception, was to be a cooperative agricultural community bearing responsibility for the social welfare of the individual, characterized by continual shifting of roles among its members" -- Encyclopedia Britannica (online). His ideas essentially amounted to a utopian-socialist manner of communal living, in which the individual was rewarded based on the productivity of the whole. There are several references to California and locations within the state scattered throughout the text, including in the dedication and on the final leaf. Not in OCLC.
