Nelson Mandela. Simbolo de la Lucha Contra el Apartheid / Symbol of the Anti-Apartheid Struggle / Symbole de la Luttle Contre l'Apartheid
[Havana]: OSPAAAL, 1986. Color-printed poster, 27.5 x 18.25 inches. Minor edge wear. Near fine. Item #5802
A rare poster issued by the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (OSPAAAL) to express political solidarity with Nelson Mandela and the struggle against South African Apartheid. The poster prints Mandela's name at top along with a depiction of the South African flag and the title of the poster printed in Spanish, English, and French. A large depiction of Mandela occupies the bottom half of the poster, and the whole is printed over a grid of orange with black lines. The poster was designed by Alberto Blanco, whose signature appears at lower right over the OSPAAAL logo. Blanco had previously designed another anti-Apartheid poster for OSPAAAL in 1982 entitled Apartheid -- No. We locate only two copies of this poster in OCLC, at the University of New Mexico and Northwestern, but a copy is also held at the Bancroft.
