Geistliches Sonnen Wend: Blümlein [manuscript title]

Herreiden: 1807. [4],273,[9]pp. Small octavo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt tooled and lettered, all edges gilt. Light wear to edges and spine bands, board with minor rubbing. Light toning and offsetting. Very good. Item #5686

A folksy, but attractively accomplished Fraktur manuscript prayer book compiled for a young German woman in early 19th-century Bavaria. The compiler, identified on the title page verso as Franz Xavier Mang, assembled here over fifty daily prayers, sacraments, and contemplations on the Immaculate Conception in order of their commission throughout the day. The work was completed for the use of Crescencia Kieferin, also identified on title page recto, in the Bavarian town of Herreiden during 1807. The title, "Spiritual Solstice -- Little Flower," is represented in a frontispiece manuscript illustration of a woman praying in a field of sunflowers, with a radiant sun and heavenly pastiche overhead as well as in an ornamental illustration of a sun with extensive rays near the end of the text. An index of all entries is at the rear. A very good example, in a contemporary binding.
