Translated as "The Thinker of Peru," this work seeks to defend the conduct of Viceroy Jose Abascal during the war for independence in Peru. The author, Jose Hipolito Unanue (1755-1833), was a Peruvian physician, naturalist, and professor. He was later active in Peruvian politics, playing a roll in the independence movement and serving as Peru's first Minister of Finance.
