A scarce, and large, broadside news sheet published by the heirs of Antonio Vanegas Arroyo that prints news, rumors, and sensational stories during the latter stages of the Mexican Revolution. The elder Arroyo died in 1917, and his two sons, Antonio and Blas, inherited his publishing business, and they attempted to continue in the style of "popular press," as evidenced by the present work. This news sheet prints four headlines. The first, printed in red, announces a rumor that General Lucio Blanco, a major military figure in the struggle for power, had been arrested in Texas for violation of neutrality after seeking exile in Laredo in late 1917. The second heading accuses the forces of another significant general, Guadalupe Sanchez, of pillaging the countryside surrounding Veracruz. It reads, rather editorially, "Las Fuerzas del Gnrl. Guadalupe Sanchez Roban Saquen y Asaltan. ¿Esas Son las Decantadas Garatias del Gobierno?" The main body of the text is devoted to the movements and engagements of Sanchez's troops around Veracruz, as well as accusations of various depredations. The final section of text discusses the rumor of an invasion from West Texas by forces newly raised by Pablso Gonzalez under the headline, "P. Gonzalez Con Gente Armada Penetra a Territorio Nacional...." The broadside is illustrated by a reused and wholly unrelated woodcut by Jose Guadalupe Posada, which depicts a man being garroted on a platform while a priest and a mob look on. A headline for the illustration reads, "Angustiosa Agonia de un Ahorcado." The continued, posthumous use of Posada's woodcuts, even to illustrate wholly unrelated publications, demonstrates the enduring attraction of his images. In all, a fascinating Revolution-era concatenation of the popular press, in the tradition of Arroyo and Posada.
