Explicacion de una Parte de la Doctrina Cristiana...Traducido al Idioma Yucateco

Merida de Yucatan: Oficina de J.D. Espinosa, 1847. 389,[3]pp. Disbound. Early ink ownership stamp on third leaf recto. Scattered, moderate toning and staining, heavier to title page and final leaf. Good. Item #5327

Extensive explanation of Christian doctrine and the Catholic catechism in the Yucatec language, published in Merida during the midst of the Mexican-American War. The text, other than the title page, introduction, and index, is almost completely in indigenous language, and comprises thirty-nine "Instrucciones" on the twelve articles of the Nicene Creed. The translator, Joaquin Ruz, was responsible for several other works in Yucatec published during the same period. Although the end of the main text bears the caption, "Fin de la Primera Parte," no additional parts were published. Ayer notes several of Ruz's Yucatec works in his collection, but not the present one. Relatively scarce institutionally, but rare on the market; this copy is the only one that appears in available auction records for the past seventy years.
