[Oath of Office Document for Constable John Gillespie in Late-Confederate Alabama]

Moulton, Al. N.H. White, 1865. Partially-printed document, completed in manuscript, 6 x 7.5 inches, docketed on verso. Old folds, minor toning. Very good. Item #5192

An interesting relic from late-Confederate Alabama in which Constable John Gillespie solemnly swears that he has "neither given, accepted, or knowingly carried a challenge in writing or otherwise, to any person being a citizen of this STATE, to FIGHT with DEADLY WEAPONS, either in or out of this State, or aided or abetted in the same since I have been a citizen thereof." Further, Gillespie promises not to do so in the future. This particular oath of office was signed by Gillespie on March 11, 1865, just a few weeks before the conclusion of the Civil War in early April. The document was also signed by Charles Gibson, the presiding judge of Lawrence County, located in the northern part of Alabama.
