[Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album Featuring Scenes in Turn-of-the-20th-Century Southern Texas and Northern Mexico]

[Various locations in Texas and Mexico: 1901]. Fourteen leaves, illustrated with twenty-seven black-and-white photographs inserted one per page into square picture windows. Oblong small octavo. Contemporary black textured cloth photograph album, string tied. Minor staining to boards, about two-thirds of rear cover clipped away. Minor wear to photos, short closed tears to a few photos. Good plus. Item #3376

An engrossing collection of vernacular photographs capturing the locals, the sights and sounds, and some architectural landmarks in San Antonio, El Paso, Ysleta, and other locations in Texas, as well as scenes in Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. The photographs are enhanced with informative manuscript captions on the album pages, identifying subjects, locations, and often including the date. The photos feature two women and two children posed outside the "Oldest Adobe in Ysletta, Texas," an elevated view of "El Paso, Texas from where you can see three states - Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas," two views of the San Antonio "Insane Asylum," a "Mexican baby in street of Juarez, Mexico," a "Mexican band in Alameda" in Mexico City, a "Street scene in Juarez, Mexico," three scenes of a bullfight in Chihuahua, and more. The album also includes images of missions, cathedrals, churches, the San Antonio post office, and two pictures of a burro (one in Chihuahua and another "On the road from El Paso to Ysleta, Texas." The human subjects pictured here include Mr. and Mrs. Harris and their home in Ysleta, Mrs. Elliott, Mr. George Marshall and Miss Mattie Marshall in Marshall, Texas. The named subjects should assist researchers in placing the album in larger context. A wonderful selection of turn-of-the-20th-century images from southern Texas and northern Mexico.
