An interesting publication from the Niños Espósitos press in Buenos Aires, announcing the invasion of Spain by Napoleon in 1808. The text comprises a letter from Spanish authorities in Galicia to the Viceroy of Rio de la Plata, Santiago de Liniers, informing him of state of war exists between France and Spain and introducing him to Joaquin Somoza de Monsoriu, the captain of the frigate charged with bearing the news of the situation in Spain to South America. The missive goes on to say the Somoza has been charged with returning to Spain with royal funds from the Viceroyalty to aid in the war effort, and continues to solicit financial aid and military volunteers from the residents of the Rio de la Plata. Scarce, OCLC locates copies in only four U.S. institutions.
