An offering of twenty city directories ranging from Alaska to Kansas to Illinois. Directories are packed with so much information -- histories, civic information, the names and occupations of citizens and business owners, ads for local enterprises. We love directories. Primarily comprised of directories for Western states, the list also includes an early directory for Cincinnati with a segregated African-American listing, and a rare and unusual Illinois directory for the "Twin Cities" of Rock Island and Davenport, Iowa. Enjoy!
Twenty-five recent acquisitions including archives, photography, rare Western American imprints, and more. Highlights include a complete set of Civil War muster rolls for the 39th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops, unrecorded auction catalogues of Oklahoma Indian land, the first pamphlet printed in the Dakota Territory, an early Cincinnati directory with a "colored" section, utopias, and the archive of a Texas woman in the late-19th century.
A selection of material which we will be exhibiting during Rare Book Week in New York. Highlights include the archive of a Midwestern woman artist, unusual American imprints, selections of Western Americana, Civil War manuscripts and ephemera, a Chinese California directory, Mexican woodcuts, and several interesting archives, to name just a few. Enjoy!
Our fourth list focuses on promotional material for the American West -- brochures and pamphlets encouraging settlers, travelers, and investors in the region. Items here cover the Dakotas, Iowa, the Great Plains, Colorado, California, and Texas. Much of this material is ephemeral and either unrecorded or known in only a few copies. Enjoy!
A varied selection of material appearing with us at Rare Books L.A. in February 2019. Highlights include a gorgeous orotone of Mount Rainier by a Seattle photographer in the original frame; a large Arizona blueprint mining map; a small archive concerning election shenanigans in 1860s Texas; an archive of a traffic engineer studying traffic problems in Lima and Santiago; and many other interesting archival and ephemeral pieces relating to California, Texas, and the broader American West.
A list of 25 items, covering a wide array of subject areas in the 19th and 20th centuries. We are pleased to offer a Reconstruction-era dime novel with African American content, an early California directory, an unrecorded Havana imprint from the 1850s, several interesting archives, Gandhi on the art of fasting, and many more. Enjoy!
