An 1885 letter written and signed by Montana Territory prison warden Fred Wilson, announcing the discharge of four prisoners:

"I have the honor to inform you that I have this day discharged from my custody Wm. White, Geo. Dresden, Joseph Ryason and Arthur Hallam, Territorial Convicts, by reason of the expiration of their sentences; they having each been allowed one month 'good time.'"

The federal penitentiary at Deer Lodge became the Montana State Prison after statehood in 1889, and still operates on the same site today.
