[Collection of Three Pamphlet-Style Carrier's Addresses from Newport]

[Newport, R.I. 1893-1896]. Three pamphlets, varying sizes as described below. Generally nice condition, and all internally clean. Very good. Item #3804

A collection of three scarce pamphlet-style carrier's addresses issued in Newport, Rhode Island in the last decade of the 19th century. None of the three appear in OCLC searches. The details of each are as follows:

1) Twenty-Third New Year's Address of the Veteran Carrier of the Newport Enterprise. 1893 [cover title]. [Newport]: Printed at the Enterprise Office, [late 1892]. [1],10pp. Original green wrappers printed in black. Mild soiling to wrappers. Very good. The text includes numerous mentions of notable events from the previous year, organized under headings such as "Cholera scare," "Visitation of the Comet," "Jay Gould's Demise," "The Era of Trusts," "The Labor Question," and "An Unholy Alliance." No copies in OCLC; only one copy of the 1895 example at Brown.

2) A Happy New Year. Newport Enterprise New Year's Offering and Carrier's Address. 1896 [cover title]. [Newport: Newport Enterprise, late 1895]. [20]pp., plus frontispiece portrait. Original wrappers printed in black and red. Some soiling and wear to wrappers, small chip to bottom corner of front wrapper and top corner of rear wrapper. Another example of a carrier's address with subjects divided into short chapters. Also includes three poems "written expressly for the offering" by Susan Wixon, Rev. F. Denison, and M. Butler. Seemingly unrecorded, with no examples of this year in OCLC.

3) The Newport Mercury. Carrier's Address 1896 [cover title]. [Newport: Newport Mercury, late 1895]. [8]pp. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers toned, with mild edge wear. A delightful carrier's address issued by the Newport Mercury, with eight in-text illustrations complementing the text, which is presented as a narrative about "Little Jim, the Carrier." No copies of this year in OCLC.
