El Paso: 1938. 16pp. 20th-century buckram, front board gilt lettered. Minor wear to corners and spine ends. Text block toned, with heavier tanning at edges. Still very good. Item #3019

Unrecorded treatise on the causes and events of the Cristero War in Mexico during the 1920s, focusing on the role of the clergy in the religious uprisings. The conflict was instigated by the renewed enforcement of anticlerical policies by the Mexican republican government under the Constitution of 1917. In 1926, Catholic loyalists in western and central Mexico, with support of the Church, took up arms against the government in a conflict that lasted for three years that sometimes spilled over into Texas and the southwestern United States. El Paso, where the present work was written and published nearly a decade after the conclusion of hostilities, was a stronghold of support for the Cristeros, as the rebellious Mexicans Catholics were called. Not in OCLC.
