[Manuscript Document Recording Cattle Slaughtered in a Lone North Texas County During a Single Quarter in 1881]

Navarro County, Tx. August 18 to October 28, 1881. [4]pp., docketed on last page. Original folds, a few small areas of ink burn, but otherwise very clear and clean. Very good. Item #2995

A manuscript report from a processor in Navarro County, Texas documenting eighty head of "cattle slaughtered by J.A. Cooper for the quarter ending the 14th of November 1881." The document records the date, number, color, age, sex, ear mark, brand, the rancher from whom the cattle was bought, and the invoice number for each of the eighty cows, steers, and heifers slaughtered in the county in just over two months. The inclusion of the ranchers' names from whom the cows were purchased provides an interesting snapshot of their business levels and practices at the time; the marks and brands provide further important information on specific ranches. An interesting manuscript report of Texas cattle production during the height of the great southwestern cattle drives depicted in stories such as Lonesome Dove.
