A Handbook of Stories Young People's Department of the Woman's Convention Auxiliary Baptist Convention

Nashville: Sunday School Publishing Board, [1951]. 112pp. Original yellow wrappers printed in black. Light dust-soiling to wrappers, minor edge wear. Small ownership ink stamps to front wrapper, title page, last text page, and inside rear wrapper. Very good. Item #2983

A seemingly-unrecorded collection of "real life stories" published for the Young People's Department of the Woman's Convention of the National Baptist Convention. In her Foreword, Craig states that the work includes "stories of people who have achieved greatness through service" and that "some of them are still laboring in his or her field." The stories are largely biographical accounts of various, mostly Baptist, religious, and missionary workers, a large majority of whom were African American. These include a sketch of the author, Lethia Craig, reporting that Craig, who died in 1944, had been an active member of the National Baptist Church and National Director of the Young People's Department of the Baptist Women's Convention Auxiliary for eighteen years. Also among the biographies is a six-page treatment of famed singer Marian Anderson. In addition to the biographical passages, the work includes sections on the National Baptist Convention itself, as well as chapters with titles such as "The Healing of the Chief," "All for Peace," "He Saved Others," and "The Victorious Prayers of Brother Chang."
