Las Grandes Señoras

Mexico City: 1869. Four volumes in two. 339,[3]; 315,[3]; 313,[2]; 268,[2]pp. Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt. Edges and spine ends somewhat worn; boards scuffed. Even toning and occasional foxing. About very good. Item #2970

Scarce contemporary Spanish translation and Mexican edition of this historical novel by French author Arsène Houssaye. Despite the title, the plot follows the extensive adventures and romantic conquests of Octave de Parisis, a Don Juan-type character. Houssaye was a prolific author of novels, poetry, and art criticism in to mid- to late-19th-century France. The true demand for his historical romances in Mexico is unclear, but this work, although a substantial production, did not survive well -- OCLC locates only one copy, at the BNM.
