Gran Calavera Electrica Que Se les Va a Regalar Calavera Muy Fachosa de Pura Electricidad [caption title]

Mexico City: Vanegas Arroyo, [ca. 1900]. Broadsheet, 15.5 x 11.5 inches. Printed on yellow paper. A few small chips at edges; minor dampstaining and toning. Still very good. Item #2705

A very scarce calavera broadsheet illustrated by José Guadalupe Posada and published by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo. The recto imagines a grand party of calaveras animated by a supernatural electricity on the Day of the Dead at the Panteón de Dolores, the largest cemetery in Mexico. The large woodcut depicts a mass of skulls in the cemetery and skeletons arriving by electric trolley, all animated by the power of a large skeleton at left. Unusually, the woodcut is signed at bottom left by Posada; the lengthy verse beneath imagines the event in some detail, and implies that the attendees in life were accident victims of the trolleys bringing them to the cemetery. The verso prints short verses in remembrance of deceased characters of Mexico City, illustrated by ten small calavera vignettes. Two variants of this broadsheet utilize the present signed cut, the other of which uses inferior typography for the title; of the present version, OCLC locates only one individually catalogued copy, at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Berlin.
