Whittier, Ca. Will A. Smith's Print Shop, [1914]. 245pp. plus ads. Original brown publisher's cloth, cover stamped in black. Light wear and soiling to boards and contents. Very good. Item #1666

Community cook book from Whittier College, filled with numerous ads for local businesses. The foreword, written by the all-woman publishing committee, notes that proper cooking makes the "matrimonial yoke" fit better, and offers these cookery suggestions from one's neighbors to improve one's marriage. There are opening suggestions for menus and serving formal dinners, followed by sections of recipes such as appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, meats, and breads, with numerous dessert offerings. One page dictates correct amounts of food to feed fifty people. In addition to these standard cook book groupings, there is also a heading for sandwiches and one for frozen desserts, as well as pickling and preserves. Recipes include Tamale Pie, "Nut Loaf", "Nut Roast", and "Meat Substitute" for vegetarians, Compote of Pigeons, a dish called "Cannon Balls" which seems to be fried potato balls topped with a sprig of onion, and many more interesting recipes. Fewer than ten copies in OCLC, primarily in California institutions.
