Historia de Cuba [cover title]

Havana: 1935. [43] leaves, plus 599 (of 600) photographs; four extra photographs laid in. Oblong folio. Original leatherette covers, gilt, brass brads. Light soiling and wear, heavier to edges of first and last few leaves, minor worming. Final leaf heavily worn with tissue repair and some loss, several images affected. About very good. Item #1263

Album produced by the Tabacalera Cubana, makers of the famed La Corona and Susini cigars, to promote its brand and the history of Cuba. The album provides a history of Cuba from the 16th century through the 1920s which the user then illustrates with collectible photographic tobacco cards, with text and pasted-in images on facing pages. Designed to accommodate 600 silver gelatin "postales fotograficas" which were found in cigar boxes, the present volume contains all but one of the requisite cards (#472), and has four additional images laid in. The photographs are primarily portraits of the notable men in Cuban history, but also include battles, monuments, and scenes of life. Each is captioned in the image and the verso is printed with the card's number and historical caption (visible on the cards which are laid in). An interesting look at Cuban history through the eyes of its cigar manufacturers.
