List #32 - African Americana

This list contains thirty items documenting the historical Black experience in America. Items range in date from the mid-18th through the mid-20th century, and include photographs, manuscript materials, ephemera, and printed works.  Highlights include a vernacular photo album recording rare images of workers in southeast Texas; a large broadside advertising an African American comedian touring in Australia; documents on slavery in Cuba; a rare 1890 directory from Baton Rouge noting "colored" citizens; a volume of tracts assembled and presented by abolitionist Anthony Benezet; and a handsome vernacular album of an Oakland family from the 1910s.  Enjoy!

We're closing out 2021 with a bang, exhibiting this weekend at the Rose City Book Fair in Portland, Oregon.  Our list for the show includes an eclectic array of materials from the Pacific Northwest; a fabulous photo album from Alaska; a rare Japanese American newspaper; some wonderful Posada and other Latin Americana; and many other interesting items. Our first printed catalogue! A representative sampling of our latest inventory with many fabulous items.  Highlights include the first American work on aeronautics; an 18th-century manuscript signed by a Mexican freedman; a lengthy manuscript volume of decrees and sermons from the Philippines in the 19th century; the account of a Russian traveler in the American West; one of the first Brooklyn telephone directories; and more. NY Book Fair 2021 (Virtual Edition)

We had hoped to be greeting you in real life from our booth at the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, but plans change -- as do viruses -- and here we are at yet another virtual book fair. We have nevertheless compiled an interesting assortment of materials that we had planned to display in our glass cases. There are selections of Japanese Americana, several fascinating manuscript and archival pieces, views of Havana and Philadelphia, some stalwarts like Robert Rogers, and the usual blend of things we just couldn’t resist. To see them in person, you’ll simply have to place an order. Enjoy!
